Historical overview
There was a water mill in this extraordinary location since at least 1856 (such a date is visible on the wall of the mill’s building), unfortunately there are not any known documents allowing us to conclude whether there had been a mill before that date. In 1935, the then owner Malke replaced a traditional water wheel with a Francis turbine, and thus a small hydropower plant has begun its operation. After the Second World War, the SHPP often changed hands. The Francis turbine from 1935 had been removed in the 1990s. The current owner has conducted a repowering of the plant by installing a highly efficient Kaplan turbine, whereas the main weir received an active fish pass to allow for water fauna migration, and utilisation of the biological flow for generating electricity.

As per framework of the cooperation with the owner of Smrock SHPP, we have conducted a turnkey investment process. We have been responsible for acquiring all administrative decisions, as well as, creation of a multi-specialty design documentation for the SHPP. We have also taken part in the construction process as the general contractor and the supplier of Kaplan-equipped hydroset. Additionally, we have installed an active fish pass in the main weir to make it passable by water organisms, all while allowing to use the energy of the weir's biological flow for electricity generation.
